| Site Description |
Emory Pass (8200 feet) is located in the Black Range
of southwestern New Mexico midway between Hillsboro and San Lorenzo. These high
southern Rocky Mountain areas are cut by deep canyons. Vegetation varies from
piñon-juniper at lower elevations to mixed conifer. Iron creek runs from Emory Peak
west to the edge of the area. |
| Birds |
This is the eastern extreme of the range for several
species including Hutton's Vireo, Olive Warbler, Painted Redstart, and Red-faced
Warbler. This area is an excellent location to hear Spotted Owl. The birds can
be heard on both sides of the pass, just below the crest on the east side and
down to Iron Creek Campground on the west side. Northern Pygmy-Owl and
Whip-poor-will are also heard near the summit. Other western species which
breed in this area include: Montezuma Quail, Gamble's Quail, Band-tailed Pigeon,
Flammulated Owl, Gray Flycatcher, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Gray Vireo, Plumbeous
Vireo, Clark's Nutcracker, Virginia's Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler,
Grace's Warbler, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, and Black-chinned Sparrow. Species in
passage and winter visitors include: Williamson's Sapsucker, Willow Flycatcher,
Hammond's Flycatcher and Dusky Flycatcher. |
