This is a premier migrant trap. A very large variety
of migrants pass through each spring and fall. Both Barn and Great Horned Owls
often are here. In addition to normal migrants up the eastern plains of
New Mexico this spot has a long list of migrating vagrants.
Of particular interest are the species of
warblers that have been seen at this site. Over the past 6 years the following
have been observed and reported: Golden-winged Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler,
Orange-crowned Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Northern Parula, Virginia's Warbler,
Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Blue
Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Black-throated
Green Warbler, Townsend's Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Pine
Warbler, Palm Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler,
Bay-breasted Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush,
MacGillivray's Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Hooded Warbler, Wilson's Warbler,
Golden-crowned Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat.
A similar situation
exists with the flycatchers with the following having been reported:
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian
Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, Least Flycatcher, Hammond's Flycatcher, Gray
Flycatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Say's
Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Cassin's Kingbird,
Western Kingbird, Eastern Kingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.
Of the 118 species on the New Mexico Partners in
Flight watch list, 42 have been seen at this site. |
