| Site Description |
This salt playa and surrounding
wet grasslands are managed primarily by NMDG&F. On the east side of the highway
the area is privately owned. Also known as Salt Lake Refuge, Wagon Mound Lake
holds water from intermittent springs and surface runoff. The water supply is
not dependable, and the lake varies widely in size from year to year. Waterfowl
hunting is permitted during season and, with landowner permission, on
nearby private lands. |
| Birds |
One of the few sites for nesting Wilson's Phalarope
in the state. It is one of a series of lakes on the eastern NM "front range"
providing migration habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. Shorebird numbers generally not quite reaching
threshold. |
| Conservation Issues |
